Wabasso to hold special 125th celebration
WABASSO — The City of Wabasso is turning 125 years old this year, and a special three-day celebration full of activities and events will be held across the city this weekend.
Hosted between the City of Wabasso and Wabasso Area Commercial Club, events will span across three locations at the Wabasso Community Center, Francis Manderscheid Field, and City Park, located just south of the public school.
“We all kind of started ideas brewing last summer,” Jamie Taylor, helping with the event organizing, said. “We were inspired by all the things from the centennial, that 100th (celebration) 25 years ago. They threw like a really big celebration, it was really impressive. We kind of wanted to continue that tradition.”
Beginning on Friday with a book sale from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Wabasso library, there will be a food stand, axe throwing, wine tasting for those of age, a kids movie and a bean bag tournament all taking place at the Wabasso Community Center beginning at 5 p.m. and carrying on through the night.
The Wabasso Lions Club will be serving burgers and brats Friday night at 5:30 p.m. at the community center as well, where kids under 6-years-old eat free.
Chopper, labeled as “World’s Nuttiest DJ,” will have two shows for all ages on Friday as well, with a kids portion taking place at the Community Center at 6 p.m. prior to movie night, with an adult portion to follow at 9 p.m.
Come Saturday, there will be a plethora of activities for community members to check out all day beginning promptly at 8 a.m., and ending with a fireworks display and more live entertainment come the evening.
“A lot of the vendors will be set up at the pop-up market from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” Taylor said. “There will also be food trucks during the concerts at the community center at night.”
Along with the day-long pop up market along May Street, a 5K Run and Walk also starts at 8 a.m. from the high school parking lot.
A community parade will also take place at 1 p.m. as one of the weekend’s biggest events.
The parade will start at the community center, head east on Main Street and will conclude at City Park near the high school.
“The entertainment Saturday night … We have Minority Falls, a Sioux Falls band, coming at 6 p.m.,” Taylor said. “Then Rhino, another big cover band from the cities, they will be playing at 8:30 p.m., followed by fireworks.”
Live music again will take place at the community center, while fireworks are scheduled to start around 10 p.m.
“Saturday is a lot (for) the kids as well,” Taylor added. “We’ve got inflatables and bouncy houses … Also down by the Francis Manderscheid side is a softball tournament.”
Other Saturday festivities included on 3-on-3 basketball tournament at the activity center beginning at 10 a.m., a beer garden throughout the day at the softball fields, an all-school reunion at the high school and St. Anne’s from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and a kids’ pedal pull and root beer floats both at 2 p.m. at City Park.
City-wide rummage sales can also be found throughout the area all weekend long 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The weekend festivities will come to a close with a pancake breakfast held at the community center Sunday morning 9 a.m. to noon.
