Railroad detour starts July 14 in Marshall

BNSF Railway replacing tracks on Highway 68/59

MARSHALL — Another road closure will go into effect in Marshall this month.

Starting July 14, drivers will not be able to go through the railroad crossing at Highway 68/59 (Main Street) in Marshall, while BNSF Railway replaces the train tracks.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation said through traffic will be detoured onto Channel Parkway, Highway 19, 240th Avenue, and Highway 23.

According to MnDOT, the detour is expected to be in place until Au. 1, depending on weather and other unforeseeable circumstances.

The BNSF Railway project will replace the tracks at the railroad crossing, while MnDOT will also repair drainage catch basins and install drain tile in the area, MnDOT said. The total cost for the drainage improvements will be about $227,000, MnDOT said.

Eric Hanson, Marshall assistant city engineer, said the city also plans to put out some information on the crossing closure, which would include some suggestions of alternate routes. Hanson said people could check the Marshall city Facebook page for information updates.

While construction at the railroad crossing is going on, there will still be other ways to access Marshall’s downtown, Hanson said. Although West College Drive is currently under construction, East College Drive is open, and East Main Street will be open. Cross streets like Fourth, Fifth and Sixth streets will also be open.

The exception for the open downtown streets would be Crazy Days, when Main Street is temporarily closed to cars. Crazy Days is planned for July 17.

Although it’s a separate project from the BNSF track replacement, the railroad crossing will be going on at the same time as reconstruction on Minnesota Highway 19 (West College Drive) in Marshall. The Minnesota Department of Transportation said a detour on Country Club Drive starts today, as crews get ready to start building a roundabout near the National Guard Armory.

Country Club Drive will be closed from Southview Drive to Highway 19. Traffic will be detoured onto Southview Drive and U.S. Highway 59 until the end of September, depending on circumstances like weather, MnDOT said last week.

Starting at $3.95/week.
