Florence man charged with arson in house fire

MARSHALL — A Florence man was charged with arson in Lyon County District Court on Tuesday, in connection with a house fire in Florence this week. Court records said Moises Reyes, 29, is charged with one count of first degree arson.

A criminal complaint alleges that Reyes set his mother’s house on fire on Monday. The complaint said fire departments from multiple jurisdictions were paged to a house fire on Harrison Avenue in Florence around 8:20 a.m.

The complaint alleged that Reyes initially told law enforcement he was working outside the house when he noticed smoke coming from inside, and tried to put out the fire. However, Reyes later told law enforcement he was “frustrated,” and had lit a gas can on fire and threw it on candles set up in his bedroom, the complaint alleged.

Reyes’ mother owned the house, but Reyes was the only person there the day of the fire, the complaint said.

Reyes appeared at a remote hearing held in Lyon County District Court on Tuesday, court records said. Bail for Reyes was set at $170,000 cash or bond without conditions, or $110,000 with conditions including that he abide by laws, not have contact with witnesses and victims, and that he stay a reasonable distance away from the victim’s residence.

A future hearing date was set for July 29, court records said.

Starting at $3.95/week.
