Extra speeding enforcement starts Thursday
Lyon County joins statewide enforcement campaign
MARSHALL — Area law enforcement will be on the lookout for speeders starting this holiday weekend. On July 3, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is joining a border-to-border campaign focused on reducing traffic deaths on Minnesota highways.
On Thursday, drivers can expect to see increased law enforcement presence along Minnesota Highway 19, U.S. Highway 14, and Minnesota Highway 60, the Sheriff’s Office said. The Sheriff’s Office said it will also take part in an extra speed enforcement and awareness campaign running through September 2.
Speed is one of the main factors contributing to fatal crashes in Minnesota, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Last year, there were 151 traffic fatalities in Minnesota between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Out of those fatalities, 44 were speed-related, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The other top factors in fatal crashes last year were alcohol, not wearing a seat belt, and distracted driving.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety will be coordinating extra speed enforcement this summer, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The roads aren’t the only place that Minnesota public safety officers will be monitoring over the July 4th holiday weekend. On Tuesday, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said “Operation Dry Water,” a national campaign aimed at deterring impaired boating, will take place July 4-6.
The DNR, the Minnesota State Patrol, and county sheriff’s offices will all be cracking down on boating while intoxicated, the DNR said. In recent years, as many as half of boating fatalities in Minnesota have involved alcohol, the DNR said.
