School bus driver pleads guilty to careless driving

Charges brought in connection with April crash

MARSHALL — A school bus driver involved in a collision with another vehicle this spring has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor careless driving charges, Lyon County District Court records said. A sentencing hearing date for Brian Ray Obe, 69, was set in August.

In April, a two-vehicle crash involving a school bus and another vehicle was reported at the intersection of Minnesota Highway 19 and Lyon County Road 5. At the time, the Minnesota State Patrol reported that the driver of a Chevrolet Equinox and a juvenile passenger on the school bus were injured.

A criminal complaint filed in Lyon County District Court alleged that Obe stopped the bus at the stop sign at the intersection of Highway 19 and County Road 5, and then continued crossing the intersection, into the path of the Equinox.

A juvenile on the bus received minor injuries to her knee in the crash, the complaint alleged. The driver of the Equinox had soreness in her wrist and arm, and in her chest area from her seat belt, the complaint alleged.

Obe appeared in Lyon County District Court via Zoom on Wednesday, court records said. Court records said Obe waived his right to an attorney, and pleaded guilty to one count of careless driving.

A sentencing hearing was set for Aug. 25, the court records said.
