Great night for a cruise
Area residents gather for Shades of the Past cruise in Marshall

A line of classic cars and trucks headed down Main Street on Friday evening, during the annual Shades of the Past cruise. People set up lawn chairs along the cruise route, and cheered for drivers they knew.
MARSHALL — It was a great evening to cruise through Marshall’s downtown. And there were plenty of spectators out setting up lawn chairs along Main Street, waiting for the rumble of engines from a long line of classic cars and trucks.
The Shades of the Past car show kicked off Friday with its annual cruise around Marshall. Dozens of vehicles, ranging from convertibles and classic Fords to an old school bus painted with flames, paraded down the street.
“There’s a cool bus!” one young spectator said. “That’s a partymobile,” said another person in the crowd.
People out watching the cruise cheered for their favorite cars, and waved to drivers they knew. Several of the people gathered near Memorial Park had friends or family driving vehicles in the event.
“I’ve got two grandsons and two sons driving in this,” Joan Citrowske said.
Many spectators had favorite cars they were hoping to see Friday night. Bob McKeen said he liked seeing the older classic cars. “The older, the better,” he said.
“I really like the Mustangs, but I like when they spin out,” said Maisie Williams. Williams was part of a group of kids who were having fun hearing some of the passing cars’ tires squeal.
Further down the street, Tom Polfliet had picked out a spot at the corner of Third Street to get a good view of the cruise. “I love it,” he said.
Polfliet said he’s always loved cars. “When I came back from Vietnam, the first thing I did was get a 1968 GTO.” While he no longer has that muscle car, Polfliet said he enjoys going to the Shades of the Past show every year. “It’s a very good show,” he said.
