Marshall business owner charged with assault with dangerous weapon
MARSHALL — A Marshall business owner appeared in Lyon County District Court Wednesday on felony assault and threat charges, court records said.
Gregory Scott Taylor, 77, was charged with second degree assault with a dangerous weapon and making terroristic threats.
A criminal complaint alleges Taylor grabbed a handgun during a dispute with a man in Marshall in April.
Court records said a future hearing date for Taylor was set in July.
On April 3, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and Marshall Police received a call of a person being held at gunpoint at Taylor’s business in Marshall, the complaint alleged. Law enforcement officers found Taylor and another man, later identified as Jeffrey Johnson, at the office, the complaint said.
The complaint alleges that police removed a loaded revolver from Taylor’s pocket.
Johnson told police he was renting an apartment from Taylor and had been ordered to pay a $65 court fee after a hearing held earlier that day, the complaint alleged. While at the office, Johnson made a request to vacate the apartment and also asked for a copy of his lease agreement, the complaint alleged. Taylor told Johnson to leave and said the he was trespassing, the complaint alleged.
Johnson told police that Taylor grabbed a handgun, but did not point it directly at him, the complaint alleged.
In a statement to police, Taylor said Johnson had hesitated to sign a vacancy agreement and later refused to leave the office until he got a copy of his lease, the complaint alleged. Taylor said that, when Johnson refused to leave he told Johnson that “he might have to have his friends Smith and Wesson” help get Johnson out of the business, the complaint alleged. Taylor said he took a pistol down from a shelf and placed it in his back pocket, the complaint alleged.
Taylor appeared in court at a Zoom hearing on Wednesday, Lyon County court records said. Bail was set at $45,000 without conditions, or release with conditions including that Taylor appear in court, not have unnecessary contact with witnesses, and not possess firearms.
A future hearing date was set for July 1.
