Officials investigating threats made on social media
School district sends email to families — not sure posts directed to Marshall
MARSHALL — There were unsubstantiated social media threats circulating the Internet regarding an unidentified school Tuesday morning, but Marshall police and school district officials believe there is no credibility to the threats and immediately started an investigation.
Superintendent Jeremy Williams sent an email out to families, detailing they are actively working with law enforcement and investigating the situation.
“At this time, we have no reason to believe that the threat is credible,” Williams wrote. “The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priorities, and we are committed to maintaining a secure environment for everyone.”
The threats made were not specifically addressed to any Marshall area school.
“It doesn’t identify any school, and we’re not even sure it originated in Marshall,” Williams told the Independent. “We had some kids sharing it on social media, is where it came to our attention. Some parents brought to our attention from there.”
The content of the social media regarded a shooting.
“It was a very general threat, saying that there would be a shooting at a school, but it doesn’t say any details about where they’re talking about. We’ve had no way to tie it back to anything from here,” Williams said. “That’s why we sent that (email) out. Just affirmation that we do know that that’s out there, and that there really is no reason to believe it’s connected to Marshall at all.”
Marshall Public Safety Director Jim Marshall also said the Marshall Police Department was made aware of the threat, and police were working to investigate it.
“I don’t believe it was specific to the Marshall School District, or to any individual in the district,” Marshall said.
In addition to investigating the threat, police patrols also had an increased presence around Marshall schools on Tuesday, Marshall said.
Williams also noted extra officers around the district are in place of extra caution, but are running businesses as usual. He also affirmed all building entrances are secured throughout the day.
“We encourage you to speak with your children about the importance of reporting any suspicious activity or concerns to a trusted adult or to law enforcement,” Williams wrote in the email.
