Area cyclists are invited to hit the trail this weekend, as a segment of the Casey Jones State Trail is dedicated in Pipestone County.

The Friends of the Casey Jones Trail said a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Sunday for the Woodstock section of the trail.

Members of the public are invited to bike or walk the newly completed trail segment running from Woodstock to Pipestone, organizers said. The ribbon cutting will take place in Woodstock at 2 p.m., and the trail ride will be followed by a meal in Pipestone, near the trail’s end.

The Casey Jones State Trail was one of the first state trails authorized by Minnesota in the late 1960s, event organizers said. The trail was named after legendary railroad engineer Casey Jones, who was killed in a railroad accident in 1900. The trail is owned by the state of Minnesota and managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The Woodstock section of the Casey Jones Trail includes a variety of trail surfaces, event organizers said in a news release. The trail segment includes a 12-mile stretch of former railroad grade between Pipestone and Woodstock; an eight-mile paved segment from Pipestone to County Road 67; two miles of grade gravel surface leading into Woodstock; and two miles of unmaintained, natural surface toward the trail’s end.

Cyclists can register for the trail ride by scanning a QR code posted to the Friends of the Casey Jones State Trail’s Facebook page. There will be free burgers and hot dogs for registered participants, event organizers said.
