MARSHALL -- Erosion from a nearby stream is threatening a gravel road in Amiret Township.
This week, the Lyon County Board approved a proposal to use buffer enforcement funds to help stabilize the streambank.
The cost to install riprap along two segments of the stream near 330th Avenue was estimated at around $32,500, said Lyon County Soil and Water Conservation District Administrator John Biren.
Biren said the streambank stabilization project would focus on an area near 330th Avenue in Section 15 of Amiret Township.
"We were working with them last year on a proposal to help the township road there," Biren said. Over the years, there had been some loss of trees along the stream, and erosion was getting very close to the roadway, Biren said.
To help fight the erosion, there was a proposal to put riprap in along two segments of the streambank. One segment would be 135 feet long, and the other would be 145 feet long. The cost estimate for the project came to $32,550. That amount didn't include the cost of engineering fees, Biren said.
There was also a utility pole near the streambank in that area, that will eventually need to be moved, Biren said. However, he said that wasn't part of the stabilization project.
Biren recommended that commissioners approve the use of buffer enforcement funds for the project.
After discussion, Commissioner Rick Anderson moved that the board approve funding for up to 90% of the project costs. That came to $29,295, said Lyon County Administrator Loren Stomberg.
Anderson's motion passed.
