Marshall Area Senior Citizens celebrates 40th anniversary

MARSHALL -- The Marshall Adult Community Center is a busy place, but there was lots of extra bustle on Tuesday afternoon.
At tables set up around the center, area residents were playing games of canasta, dominoes, Yahtzee and a lot more.
The "games expo" was just one way that members of the Marshall Area Senior Citizens (MASC) group were encouraging seniors to meet people and have fun. Over the past 40 years, MASC has been bringing people together, members said.
"It's like family here," said Joyce Greeley, a member of the MASC board.
On Tuesday, MASC celebrated the 40th anniversary of the group's incorporation. The party started with a lunch hosted by Lutheran Social Services and sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, the Hitching Post and McLaughlin Farms. MASC members highlighted events like game meet-ups during an open house. And later on, there was an outdoor performance by Duel Purpose Dueling Pianos.
"It's an opportunity to celebrate 40 years, but also to share all that the center has to offer the community," said ACC Coordinator Katie Brusven.
MASC was incorporated in 1984, but its mission goes back a lot further than that, Brusven said. In the 1960s, a group of Marshall women started an effort to reach out to "shut-ins" in the community. Their project would eventually lead to the formation of MASC. Today, MASC and the ACC help make possible a wide range of programs from exercise and health groups, to speakers and regular card and game sessions.
Mary Jacobson and Gail Bethune were among the people who came to the anniversary lunch, and stayed to check out the game expo.
"Everything was really delicious," Jacobson said of the meal. Jacobson said she had also told Bethune about the variety of activities at the ACC.
"We do a lot of things," she said.
Greeley said a lot of community members are surprised by all the different things that go on at the ACC. It was good to be able to share some of MASC's activities with people at the open house.
"It's a terrific place to be," Carol Nienkerk said of the ACC.
