HENDRICKS — The weather didn’t always cooperate for the city of Hendricks’ Summerfest celebrations. But it didn’t stop people from having a good time, David Blees said.
“Overall we had a great weekend,” said Blees, the Hendricks city administrator. There was some heavy rain on Saturday night. “We had to cancel the street dance, but there were still a lot of people up at The Shed.”
Lots of Summerfest events brought out crowds, Blees said.
“The basketball tournament was a huge hit,” he said. On Friday, the “Pizza, Puzzles and Pints” competition also drew a crowd.
“All kinds of spectators were there cheering people on,” Blees said.
The Summerfest duck race, which raises funds for the Hendricks Community Club andFoundation, also had a good turnout this year, said Greg Pearson of the Lake Hendricks Improvement Association. Hundreds of rubber ducks were released from the Kiwanis Bridge at Lake Hendricks, where they drifted through a culvert to where organizers were waiting to corral them.
The duck races have been part of Summerfest “for about 10 to 15 years,” Pearson said.
“We had a good participation this year,” he said. The LHIA plans to sell more ducks for the race next year, to go along with Hendricks’ 125th anniversary.
Community spirit was something that brought lots of people out to Summerfest, Blees said. One event that ended up being popular was a dunk tank supporting the Hendricks school. The Hendricks Fire Department held a burger feed that was successful enough to sell out, he said.
“Really the majority of the day was awesome,” Blees said.
