Filings show contested races in county elections
The filing period for most state and county offices in Minnesota closed last week, with several more area candidates filing for election. There will be some contested races in southwest Minnesota, including not just Congressional and state legislative races, but county commissioner races in Lyon, Murray, Redwood and Yellow Medicine Counties.
The candidate filing period for most federal, state and county offices ran from May 21 through June 4. However, most area city and school district elections have a later filing period. Candidates running for city council or school board seats will be able to file from July 30 through Aug. 13.
Below is a roundup of candidates who have filed in state and county races in the area:
In Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District, U.S. Rep. Michelle Fischbach will be running for re-election, against Republican challenger Steve Boyd, and DFL candidate AJ Peters.
In Minnesota House District 15A, which includes Lyon, Yellow Medicine and Lac qui Parle counties, state Rep. Chris Swedzinski is running for re-election, against DFL challenger Anthony Studemann.
In Minnesota House District 21A, which includes Lincoln, Pipestone, Murray, Rock, and parts of Cottonwood and Nobles counties, Rep. Joe Schomacker is running for re-election against Independence party candidate Credence Petroff.
County races up for election include commissioner seats, and seats on soil and water supervisory boards. In Lincoln County, there will be elections in Commissioner Districts 1, 3 and 5, and for Soil and Water Districts 2 and 5.
Corey Sik is running for re-election in Commissioner District 1. Dean Nielsen is running for re-election in District 3, and Steve Hauswedell is running for re-election in District 5.
Jeff Paluch filed for Soil and Water District 2, and Ron Bunjer filed for Soil and Water District 5.
In Lyon County, there will be elections in Commissioner Districts 2, 4 and 5, and in Soil and Water Districts 3 and 5. Todd Draper is running for re-election in Commissioner District 2. Gary Crowley is running for re-election in District 4. Rick Anderson is running for re-election in District 5, against challenger Tom Chandler.
Gary Laleman filed for Soil and Water District 1, Mason Johnson filed for Soil and Water District 3, and Justin Hively filed for Soil and Water District 5.
In Murray County, there will be elections in Commissioner Districts 1, 2, and 5, and in Soil and Water Districts 2, 4 and 5. Loy Woelber is running in Commissioner District 1. Dennis Bertrand, Mark Carlson and Trevor Humphrey are running in District 2. Randy Donahue and Roger Zins are running in District 5.
Jason Miller filed for a special election in Soil and Water District 2. Mona Henkels filed for Soil and Water District 4, and Karen Hurd filed for Soil and Water District 5.
In Redwood County, there will be elections in Commissioner Districts 1, 4, and 5, and Soil and Water Districts 2, 3, and 4. Rick Wakefield will be running for re-election in Commissioner District 1. Robert Van Hee will be running for re-election in District 4. David Forkrud will be running for re-election in District 5, against challenger Corey Theis.
Brian Timm filed for Soil and Water District 2. Rick Maurer filed for Soil and Water District 3. No candidates filed in Soil and Water District 4.
In Yellow Medicine County, there will be elections in Commissioner Districts 3 and 5, and in Soil and Water Districts 1, 2, and 5. Mitch Kling is running for re-election in Commissioner District 3, against challenger Troy Bruflat. Glen Kack is running for re-election in District 5, against challenger Richard Hemish.
Thomas Remmele filed for Soil and Water District 1. Jerry Nelson filed for Soil and Water District 2. DeLon Clarksean filed for Soil and Water District 5.a
