Lower bail request denied for Laumann

MARSHALL — A request for lower bail has been denied for a Marshall man charged with shooting at law enforcement earlier this month.

Paul Kenneth Laumann, 63, appeared in custody for a hearing in Lyon County District Court on Tuesday.

Laumann is charged with first degree attempted murder, first degree assault, second degree assault with a dangerous weapon, making terroristic threats, and reckless discharge of a firearm. He was arrested April 17, after a multi-hour standoff with members of the regional Emergency Response Unit. A criminal complaint alleges Laumann fired a gun at a police officer in his home on East Main Street, and later also shot through a window at an officer standing outside.

At Tuesday’s hearing, defense attorney Cecil Naatz asked that a judge consider reducing the amount of bail set for Laumann. Bail had been set at $1 million without conditions, or $500,000 cash or bond with conditions.

“We believe that is unattainable,” Naatz said. “It is like setting no bail at all, it’s so high.”

Naatz asked for bail to be reduced to $500,000 without conditions, or between $50,000 and $100,000 with conditions. It still might not be possible for Laumann to make bail at that level, but the amount of money would be “at least within reason,” Naatz said.

Lyon County Attorney Abby Wikelius asked the judge to deny Naatz’s request. The current bail took into account factors like public safety, she said.

“The circumstances in the complaint speak for themselves,” Wikelius said.

District Court Judge Michelle Dietrich denied the request for lower bail.

A date for an omnibus hearing with testimony was set for May 14. At an omnibus hearing, the court determines whether there is probable cause for the charges against a defendant.
