‘It’s just the beginning’

55 seniors graduate at RTR

After receiving their diplomas, graduates of the RTR class of 2024 were each presented with white roses to give to their families.

TYLER — It was exciting – and a little bit scary. But members of the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Class of 2024 said they’d never forget graduation day.

“Today marks a milestone in our lives that we will remember forever,” said salutatorian Madison Burns.

A total of 55 RTR seniors graduated at commencement ceremonies on Sunday.

The new graduates shared a lot of memories, said RTR senior Ben Guida. “Our memories cover many miles, from elementary school in Ruthton to middle school in Russell, the old high school in Tyler and our new building here these past three years,” he said. “We’ve gone from gold shovels breaking ground at our new school, through a pandemic, and all that has led us here today.”

Burns reflected on all the different ways graduating seniors made an impact in school.

“Our class is a testament to the diversity of talents and passions that make us unique,” Burns said. Those passions included everything from learning, to athletics and theater. “Each one of us has contributed to the vitality of our school and community.”

Valedictorian Shae O’Leary encouraged her classmates to make sure they took time to appreciate how far they had come together.

“As we stand on the brink of a new adventure, it’s easy to get caught up in the anticipation of what’s next,” O’Leary said. “In doing so, we sometimes overlook the beauty and the significance of the present.”

Burns and senior Joseph Dagel encouraged their classmates to find their passion in life after graduation, and to celebrate their successes.

“Take hold of your dreams. Don’t let go,” Dagel said. “The day you find your dream is as important as the day you came into this world.”

“As we leave here today, we’re stepping into a new world. It’s a bit scary, but also incredibly exciting,” O’Leary said. “Let’s work really hard to make a difference, to be kind, and to never stop learning. Remember this isn’t the end. It’s just the beginning of a new adventure.”
