County to seek third Legacy grant for Garvin Park

Grant would fund electrical updates, new observation tower

MARSHALL — So far, Lyon County has been successful when it comes to requesting state Legacy grant funding to improve Garvin Park. Now after receiving two grants, county staff have gotten the go-ahead to apply for a third.

On Tuesday, Lyon County Commissioners approved a request to apply for about $780,000 in Legacy grant funding for park improvements like electrical updates and replacement of the park’s observation tower.

Lyon County environmental administrator Roger Schroeder said the county received grant funding for park facilities improvements that are already underway, and a second grant application to build camper cabins has been approved.

The third grant that county staff hoped to apply for would fund electrical upgrades at Garvin Park’s upper and lower campgrounds, a new camp shelter at the upper campground, a new observation tower, and new play equipment at the Garvin Park ballfield.

“We’re looking at putting in some sort of nature-scape playground,” said county park programming director Brooke Kor.

“Originally, they were all part of one package,” Schroeder said of the three grant requests. However, the county had been asked to break up its requests for Garvin Park into smaller projects, so more funding could go to other applicants around the state.

Schroeder said the newest grant request would come to $780,499, with a local match of $86,722. The matching funds could come out of whichever designated source the board felt was appropriate, he said.

If Lyon County receives the grant, the funding would be for fiscal year 2026, which starts in summer 2025, Schroeder said.

Commissioners voted to allow county staff to apply for a Legacy grant.
