Marshall woman charged in infant’s death

MARSHALL — A Marshall woman has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a five-week-old infant in Marshall in September, according to Lyon County court records.

Heaven Lee Jones, 29, appeared in Lyon County District Court on Monday on two counts of second degree manslaughter, court records said. A criminal complaint alleges that Jones’ negligence created risks that led to the death of the infant boy.

The complaint alleges that emergency responders received a call for an infant who was possibly deceased at an apartment in Marshall. After arriving at the scene, a Marshall Police detective began to perform lifesaving efforts, but soon afterward paramedics declared the infant dead, according to the complaint.

The complaint alleges that Jones told police she had gone to sleep with the baby on her chest, and could not find him when she woke up. The baby was found on the floor on the side of the bed against the wall, the complaint alleges.

An autopsy conducted by the Hennepin County Assistant Medical Examiner said positional asphyxia was the probable cause of the infant’s death, the criminal complaint said.

The complaint also alleges that a test found alcohol and delta-9 THC in Jones’ blood. Police calculated that Jones’ blood alcohol concentration at the time she went to sleep would have been over 0.28, the complaint alleges.

Jones appeared in court Monday morning. Bail was set at $110,000 without conditions, or $35,000 cash or bond with conditions including that Jones stay in Minnesota, abstain from alcohol and drugs, and be subject to random testing.

A future hearing date was set for April 9, court records said.
