MARSHALL — Mayor Bob Byrnes proclaimed during Tuesday’s council meeting that a recent award involving the downtown reconstruction project proves the city’s commitment in supporting the local economy.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Concrete Paving Association of Minnesota awarded the City of Marshall a 2023 Minnesota Concrete Paving Award for the reconstruction of North 3rd Street and West Lyon Street.

“This is another example of the city’s commitment to downtown Marshall, and we are proud that we supported our local economy with local contractors completing the project,” Byrnes said.

After input and review from the Downtown Business Association, the City Council authorized the project to move forward and awarded the bid to local contractor R&G Construction on March 14 of last year.

City Engineer Jason Anderson is thankful for the input and support from the community through numerous Marshall Downtown Business Association discussions.

(It was) “gratifying to receive recognition on a statewide level as it supports the work of our city council, our staff and the local business community,” Anderson said.

Byrnes presented the award to the city council and gave plaques to Anderson and Gregg Mathiowetz of R&G Construction

The North 3rd Street and West Lyon Street improvement project included full reconstruction and utility replacement on North 3rd Street from West Main Street (US Highway 59) to West Redwood Street and West Lyon Street from East College Drive (Minnesota Highway 19) to North 5th Street.

In addition to R&G Construction Company being the general contractor, additional contractors for the project included Hess, Concrete, Inc. The concrete for the project was supplied by Buffalo Ridge Concrete, Inc.
