Vorbach sworn in to Marshall School Board

Anne Marie Vorbach officially joined the Marshall School Board, after being sworn in at Monday’s board meeting. Vorbach will fill the remainder of former board member Bill Mulso’s term.

MARSHALL — Marshall Public Schools is officially back to having a full school board. At Monday’s school board meeting, Anne Marie Vorbach was sworn in as a board member.

Vorbach said she has been working to get up to speed to be able to fulfill her duties on the school board. “I want to try and be as active a board member as I can,” she said Monday. At the same time, Vorbach said, she also wanted to stay humble.

Vorbach was one of three Marshall residents who applied to fill a temporary vacancy on the school board, left when former board member Bill Mulso stepped down to take a new job opportunity. Mulso’s term ran until the end of 2024.

Applicants Vorbach, Ryan Schlenner and Ben Walker were interviewed by the school board in early January, and board members voted to appoint Vorbach to fill the vacant seat. Vorbach is also active in other community organizations, including the Marshall-Lyon County Library Board, and the MORE Network (Marshall/Mustangs Overcoming Racism through Education).

On Monday, school board chairman Matt Coleman read the oath of office as Vorbach was sworn in. School board members were responsible for equitable and quality education for all students in the Marshall school district, he said.

“In carrying out this responsibility, you will be asked to fulfill the roles of vision, structure, accountability and advocacy,” Coleman said. “Furthermore, we must strive to work together with the superintendent and staff to lead the district toward fulfilling the vision we have created, fostering excellence for every student in the areas of academic skills and knowledge, citizenship and personal development.”

In the time between being appointed to the school board and being sworn in, Vorbach has had a chance to observe school board meetings, and attend a Minnesota School Board Association conference.

“I am trying to ramp up quickly because I’m only on the board for one year,” Vorbach said.

She said she had also had a chance to meet MPS district staff and each of the principals at Marshall schools. The process of learning about her new role and getting to know district staff “has been really exciting and wonderful,” Vorbach said.
