Lyon, Pipestone counties to share highway project

MARSHALL — Lyon County and Pipestone County will be teaming up to cover the cost of resurfacing a 1.5-mile stretch of County Highway 12 this year.

On Tuesday, Lyon County commissioners voted to approve a cooperative construction agreement with Pipestone County for the project.

Lyon County Highway Engineer Aaron VanMoer said Pipestone County had plans to resurface part of County Highway 12 south of Twin Lakes Park and the city of Florence.

“Their section is scheduled for an overlay,” VanMoer said. Pipestone County was resurfacing 0.9 miles of Highway 12, starting at Minnesota Highway 23 and ending in the middle of a section of land where Pipestone, Lyon and Murray counties meet. Pipestone County had reached out to ask if they should continue their project another 0.6 miles into Lyon County, ending at the intersection of County Road 51, VanMoer said.

CSAH 12 is a road used for access to Twin Lakes Park in Lyon County, county staff said.

The cooperative agreement brought before the Lyon County Board would allow Lyon County to reimburse Pipestone County for part of the construction costs, VanMoer said. Under the cooperative construction agreement, Pipestone County would be responsible for 60% of the cost of the project, and Lyon County for 40%.

The project is anticipated to be funded by state aid construction dollars, VanMoer said.

“I will say, that road needs it,” Commissioner Gary Crowley said of the proposed resurfacing work.

Commissioners voted to approve the cooperative agreement for resurfacing CSAH 12 between Highway 23 and County Road 51.

Crowley asked VanMoer if there are other resurfacing projects planned on Lyon County roads this year.

VanMoer said county staff were working on a list of possible highway resurfacing projects.

“We’re still whittling it down,” he said.
