Fire north of Marshall destroys skid loader

MARSHALL — A skid loader caught on fire in a shed at a farm northwest of Marshall on Thursday. But while the vehicle was destroyed, there were no injuries and no damage to other farm buildings, said property owner Gary Crowley.

“Nobody got hurt,” Crowley said.

Crowley is a farmer and a Lyon County Commissioner.

The Ghent Fire Department was called to a fire reported on the 2900 block of 210th Avenue on Thursday afternoon. Crowley said he saw smoke coming from the roof of a shed on his property.

At first, Crowley said, “It looked like snow was blowing off the roof, but it was not that windy out there.” It turned out to be smoke from a skid loader inside the shed that was on fire. Crowley called 911, and tried to put the fire out with extinguishers.

Firefighters were able to get the skid loader out of the shed before more damage could be done, Crowley said. He said he was thankful for the fire department’s help.
