Blizzard warning for Lyon Co. Friday and Saturday

MARSHALL — The National Weather Service declared a blizzard warning on Thursday for Friday morning through Saturday morning.

In addition to dangerously cold wind chills, the area could receive anywhere from 2 to 6 inches of blowing snow.

The blizzard warning will go into effect at 10 a.m. Friday, and last through 6 a.m. Saturday, the NWS said. Area counties including Lyon, Murray, Nobles, Cottonwood and Jackson County are all included in the blizzard warning.

A winter storm is expected to spread through the region on Friday, the NWS said. It’s not certain how much snow we can expect to see in the Marshall area, said Amanda Penning, a meteorologist at the NWS office in Sioux Falls. The Marshall area is right on the edge of where the heaviest snow is expected to fall.

“It’s in the area of highest uncertainty,” Penning said.

Snowfall totals could be deeper or lighter depending on how far north the storm moves.

The danger for the area will be a combination of snow, and high winds that are expected to pick up Friday and Saturday.

“The snow is going to be very light and fluffy, and blow around very easily,” Penning said. It could lead to blizzard conditions. “If you can change travel plans, it’s a good idea to do so.”

In addition, wind chills are expected to be dangerously cold this weekend. The NWS forecast that Lyon County could have wind chills as low as 45 degrees below zero. A wind chill warning is in effect for Lyon County from 6 p.m. Friday until noon Tuesday. Area residents are encouraged to avoid outdoor activities if possible, the NWS warning said.
