Woman stabbed in Marshall dies from injuries

Minnesota BCA investigates death of stabbing suspect shot during contact with police

Police tape blocked off part of Brussels Court in Marshall on Sunday afternoon, and law enforcement vehicles and an investigation van from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension could be seen parked outside a home where a woman was stabbed early Sunday morning. The stabbing suspect was shot, and died at the scene, Marshall Police said in a news release.

MARSHALL — A Marshall woman died after being stabbed early Sunday morning, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Monday. The woman’s assailant was also shot when Marshall Police responded to the incident, and he died at the scene.

Both deaths are being investigated by the BCA. A BCA spokesperson said Sunday that more information on the incident would be released when the bureau completes its initial investigation.

In a news release, the Marshall Police said law enforcement responded to a domestic disturbance call on the 500 block of Brussels Court, around 2:40 a.m. Sunday. When police arrived, a male subject was stabbing a woman, the MPD said.

The MPD said police made contact with the male. During the incident a Taser was used, “and at one point during the contact with the male, shots were fired,” the news release said. Police said life-saving measures were performed, but the male died at the scene.

The news release from the MPD did not specify who was shooting during the incident, or who shot the male suspect. However, the BCA is conducting a use-of-force investigation on the incident.

The woman who was stabbed was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital, where she later died of her injuries, the BCA said.

The identities of the people involved in the incident, including the stabbing victim, the suspect and police, had not been released as of Monday. However, Minneapolis resident Kent Martell told the Independent that his niece, Meredith Martell, died Sunday afternoon.

“She was a great girl, very loving,” Martell said.

Co-workers and employers at Ace Home and Hardware in Marshall also said they learned of Meredith’s death yesterday. She had worked at Ace for about four years.

“We’re all pretty sad. We’re a big family,” said Diane McCormick, at Ace. “It’s really hard to wrap our heads around it.”

Meredith was “just a really fun person,” McCormick said. Her humor showed through at work, where she liked to banter with customers and employees in the lumber department, McCormick said.

Family was also important to Meredith. “She loved her children,” Kent Martell said. Kent said Meredith had six children.

“She was a very dedicated mother,” McCormick said. “She was always there for her kids.”

The Marshall Police Department asked the BCA to investigate the shooting, the news release said.

On Sunday afternoon, police tape and vehicles blocked off part of Brussels Court, at the corner of Brussels Court and Berlin Circle. Several law enforcement vehicles and a BCA investigation van could be seen parked outside of a house on the 500 block of Brussels Court.

According to the BCA, the bureau’s Force Investigations Unit conducts independent investigations when police officers use deadly force. Investigators gather evidence at the scene of a use of deadly force, interview witnesses and officers involved, and review video footage from body cameras and squad cars.

Marshall Police said Sunday that there was no threat to the public after the incident, because the attack was not believed to be random.

“A loss of life is always incredibly sad and impactful to the family and the community,” Marshall Public Safety Director Jim Marshall said in the news release.
