Power outages reported amid icy conditions Monday

Icy conditions were taking a toll on power lines in the Marshall area on Christmas Day. Electric utilities reported a few different power outages in Lyon County on Monday afternoon.

Otter Tail Power Company reported that line crews were working to restore power to customers in both Minneota and Ghent. Xcel Energy reported two small power outages in the city of Tracy, and an outage in the city of Balaton. The Balaton outage, reported around 1 p.m. Monday, affected about 82 customers, Xcel Energy said.

Lyon-Lincoln Electric Cooperative posted on its Facebook page Monday that crews were responding to power outages as they come. LLEC encouraged area residents to be cautious about power lines damaged by the ice storm. When people see power lines on the ground, they should stay away, warn others to stay away and contact the electric utility, LLEC said. Power lines don’t have to be arcing or sparking to be live, and downed power lines can also energize things around them, like chain like fences and metal culverts, the utility said.

The National Weather Service office in Sioux Falls said a winter storm was dumping heavy snow on parts of South Dakota on Monday, while southwest Minnesota was expected to see a wintry mix of precipitation during the day. Parts of Pipestone, Murray and Nobles Counties were forecast to have ice accumulations of up to two-tenths of an inch, the NWS said. A light wintry mix was forecast to continue in the area Tuesday and Wednesday.

The NWS said a local report from northwest of Currie said about half an inch of ice had accumulated by 1 p.m., and several large tree branches were down.
