Making the holidays sparkle

Fireworks, parade cap weekend of fun in Canby

CANBY — Community members came out to light up the city of Canby on Sunday night, as part of the Hometown Holidays celebration.

A tree lighting ceremony and a fireworks display illuminated crowds of people gathered at Lake Sylvan. But that was only part of a full weekend of events planned by Canby businesses and organizations.

The Hometown Holidays celebration encouraged people to shop local, with Canby businesses being open at different times Saturday and Sunday. A variety of activities for children and families led up to a living Nativity scene and a lighted parade through Canby’s downtown. Community members and characters like the Grinch waved to the crowds lining the streets. The tree lighting and fireworks finished out the evening.

Lots of the events at Hometown Holidays were kid-friendly. On Sunday afternoon, Santa Claus made an appearance at the Canby Theatre, while Mrs. Claus read Christmas-themed stories to children at the Canby Library. Over at the Canby City Hall building, a special “Kids’ Shopping Mall” was set up to help children pick out and wrap gifts, to surprise their family members for Christmas.
