‘Only the beginning’ for Joslynn Rose

After appearing on “The Voice,” area teen keeps following her dream

Joslynn Rose’s debut on “The Voice” this fall caught a lot of people’s attention – and it’s also opened up opportunities for the Lake Benton teen. Even though Rose didn’t end up advancing through the competition, she says she’s still busy performing.

“I’m thankful for the experience of it all,” Rose said. “It’s only the beginning, but it feels like a big thing.”

Rose spoke with the Independent to talk more about her experiences on “The Voice,” and what’s coming next for her.

Rose sang for a panel of music stars during a blind audition on this season’s premiere of “The Voice,” and had panelists Niall Horan, Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani vying to be her coach. After going with Team Gwen, her next step was a battle round, where she would duet with another team member.

Joslynn was paired up with Rudi, a singer from San Antonio. Together, they performed “My Immortal” by Evanescence, with Joslynn and Rudi singing alternating lines of the song.

“It was incredible,” Rose said of her experiences on “The Voice.” “I was so excited to have been able to have done that.”

The big sister/little sister relationship Rudi and Joslynn had on “The Voice” wasn’t just something created for the cameras, Rose said.

“That’s real,” she said. “I love her so much. She taught me a lot. She took me under her wing.”

She also learned a lot from working with Stefani. “She was so encouraging, and believed in both of us,” Rose said.

In the end, the panelists chose Rudi as the winner of the battle. Rose said she had a mix of emotions – she was “so, so proud” of Rudi, but it was also difficult to be eliminated from the competition.

“It’s hard to be told ‘no’ on international television,” Rose said. It’s especially tough because performing means a lot for a singer, she said. “You put yourself into the song. You put your heart into the song,” she said.

Rose said faith, and support from her family, helped her get through. The experiences of working with Stefani and the crew of “The Voice,” and connecting with the other contestants, were also positive.

“The people made it so much better,” Rose said. “Everyone was so down-to-earth.”

Although she didn’t advance on “The Voice,” it’s not the end for Rose as a singer and performer.

“It’s made me more sure of myself,” and strengthened her dream of singing, she said. “This is where I want to go for now.”

Rose said she has different projects, including live performances and even some recording, that she’s working on. “A lot of amazing mentors helped me out with that,” she said.

Rose will be singing and acting as the MC at Safe Haven Foster Shoppe’s ONE fundraiser event in Blaine on Dec. 2. Safe Haven Foster Shoppe is a nonprofit organization that helps provide supplies for children in foster care, Rose said.

“I’m just really excited,” to help Safe Haven’s cause, Rose said. “It’s something that’s dear to my heart.”

Rose will also be sharing some holiday cheer in southwest Minnesota in December.

“I’m going to do my own show on Dec. 17 in Tyler,” Rose said. She said it was both exciting and a little scary to get ready for a solo show. “It’s my first thing where it’s just me,” she said.

At the same time, Rose said it will be good to perform for a local audience.

“I’m glad I get to be back for Christmas, and share that with people I’ve known my entire life,” she said. “I’m glad that I can give back to people who have supported me so much through this journey.”
