Lyon, Redwood Counties receive state assistance for spring flooding

MARSHALL — Lyon and Redwood County are among seven Minnesota counties that will receive state emergency assistance in response to damage caused by flooding in April.

Funds from Minnesota’s Disaster Assistance Contingency Fund will be distributed to Cass, Itasca, Lyon, Polk, Redwood, Ramsey and Washington Counties, a Wednesday news release said. Minnesota’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management will allocate funds to Lyon County as necessary to provide public assistance, and deliver additional assistance if requested by a local government as warranted.

This spring, Lyon County had declared a state of emergency in response to flooding from rapid snowmelt in April. Water damage wasn’t widespread, but there were problems with flooding in some places around the county, said emergency manager Emily Coequyt.

“There were some culverts that needed to be replaced, and road washouts,” Coequyt said. “Not all of our townships were affected,” she said, but there were places that had significant damage, including in Fairview and Vallers Townships.

Lyon County reported a total of $95,457 in damage, Coequyt said. That wasn’t enough for the county to receive federal assistance, but they were eligible for state assistance, she said.

State Rep. Chris Swedzinski, R-Ghent, spoke in support of Lyon County’s receiving assistance funds in a Wednesday news release.

“Minnesota has a history of stepping up to deliver relief when natural disasters occur and it is good to see this response to help Lyon County recover from damages suffered last spring,” Swedzinski said. “It’s nice the contingency fund was established to help relief get where it’s needed.”
