Taste of Marshall draws crowd of more than 400

MARSHALL — There were plenty of things to try at Monday’s Taste of Marshall Event — and the crowd at the Red Baron Arena and Expo was likely record-setting, organizers said.

A total of 448 people pre-registered to sample food and beverages from area vendors in addition to those who bought tickets at the door, said Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce President Brad Gruhot.

“If we get to 500, it will be the most ever,” Gruhot said.

A total of 20 vendors, from restaurants to bakeries and liquor stores, all offered samples for the crowd moving around the expo space.

“It’s been really busy. You can have a line of 30 people in 30 seconds,” said Karla Antony. Antony was welcoming visitors to the booth where Atlantic Place restaurant staff were serving up samples of potato gnocchi and shrimp etouffe.

The food was going fast at different booths around the arena. Some vendors had so many visitors they were out of food samples before the end of the night. Mariachi Fiesta owners Eloy and Liz Cid said they had prepared about 500 servings of chimichangas and tacos for the event, but they went fast.

“They’re gone,” Eloy Cid said.

The Cids, who became the new Mariachi Fiesta owners this summer, said it was good to see community members and restaurant customers visit their booth.

“Everyone has been really good to us,” Liz Cid said.

The mix of vendors at this year’s Taste of Marshall ranged from established restaurants and stores to newer businesses. Lindsey Matthys brought her cottage bakery business, Here We Crumb, to the event to share samples of a variety of sweet treats.

“We’re doing what we can to try and get some traction,” Matthys said.

Cindy Monterroso said Taste of Marshall was a good opportunity for Sabor Latin Kitchen to connect with area residents and customers.

“A lot of people still don’t know we’re on Main Street,” she said.

Sabor’s pupusas, chips and salsa were also popular with Taste of Marshall visitors Monday night.

“We are sold out completely,” Monterroso said.

Vendors said they were glad to see the crowds and interact with people at the event.

“It’s been fun. People are excited to be here,” Antony said.

Starting at $3.95/week.
