Tenant lineup changes at former Shopko building

Big Lots no longer coming to Marshall

MARSHALL — One of the businesses planned to open in the former Shopko building in Marshall will not be moving in after all. Big Lots, one of two stores revealed on a sign outside the building earlier this year, is not coming to Marshall, Marshall Economic Development Authority Director Lauren Deutz confirmed Monday.

The Independent reached out to the owners of the former Shopko property, Woodcrest Capital, about the status of Big Lots and Marshalls, the other business planned to move into the building. An e-mail to a Woodcrest Capital representative did not get a response Monday afternoon.

The former Shopko building in Marshall had stood vacant for more than three years, after the Shopko company went into liquidation in 2019. Woodcrest Capital bought the property at auction in 2021, and have been working with potential commercial tenants to fill up the empty building.

The first new business to move into the old Shopko, Harbor Freight Tools, opened this spring. In May, a sign outside the building showed that a Big Lots and a Marshalls store were planned to move into the remaining commercial spaces in the building.

Big Lots is an Ohio-based retailer with more than 1,400 locations across the U.S. Marshalls is an off-price apparel and home fashion store chain operated by The TJX Companies, Inc. Currently, the closest Marshalls locations to Marshall are in Sioux Falls and Hutchinson.

Wells Fargo hours changing, bank still open

A different business in Marshall has changed its hours, but is not closing down. Signs at the Wells Fargo location on Marshall’s Main Street said the bank’s lobby hours would temporarily be from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and the drive-up window was closed.

Wells Fargo spokesperson Staci Schiller said Monday that, although the Marshall location’s hours had changed, the bank was not being closed.
