Man shot by law enforcement in Granite Falls cemetery

Task force was pursuing fugitive, Chippewa Sheriff’s Office said

GRANITE FALLS — A fugitive from the Minnesota Department of Corrections was shot by law enforcement at a rural cemetery Wednesday, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office said. The incident is under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Around 3:36 p.m. Wednesday, members of the CEE-VI Drug Task Force were trying to apprehend a fugitive wanted by the Department of Corrections near the city of Granite Falls, a news release from the Sheriff’s Office said. The man the task force was trying to apprehend ran from his vehicle and into the Granite Falls City Cemetery. The man was armed and refused to follow commands, the news release said.

During the apprehension, a task force member shot the man, the Sheriff’s Office said. The man was reported to be in stable condition after being taken to a hospital in the Twin Cities metro area, the Sheriff’s Office said.

An investigation of the incident is ongoing, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The CEE-VI Drug Task Force is a cooperative unit made up of county and city law enforcement officers from Swift, Meeker, Chippewa, Yellow Medicine and Kandiyohi Counties.
