Fire engulfs former cafe building in Granite Falls

Firefighter receives minor injury, Fire Department says

GRANITE FALLS — Firefighters from multiple departments spent much of the day Sunday battling flames at a building near U.S. Highway 212 in Granite Falls. The fire injured one person, and caused significant damage to the former Granite Grinder cafe building.

In a weekend news release, the Granite Falls Fire Department said it received a call for a structure fire at the Granite Grinder at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday. The Grinder, a longtime Granite Falls business, had been closed for several months.

After responding to the fire scene, the Granite Falls FD requested mutual aid from area fire departments. The responding departments included firefighters from Sacred Heart, Wood Lake, Hanley Falls and Clarkfield.

Firefighting operations continued until early afternoon Sunday, the news release said. One firefighter was treated for a minor injury at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Granite Falls Fire Department and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Fire Department said.

Other responding agencies at the fire scene included Granite Falls Police, Avera Granite Falls ambulance, the Minnesota State Patrol and Minnesota Department of Transportation, the city of Granite Falls public works department, the city of Granite Falls Light and Power, Great Plains Natural Gas, Barker Excavating and Fagen Crane and Equipment.

Community and fire department family members also played a big role in helping to keep firefighters hydrated on Sunday, the Granite Falls Fire Department said.
