Absentee voting begins Friday on Marshall sales tax extension
MARSHALL — Starting this Friday, Marshall voters will be able to cast absentee ballots on the question of whether to extend the city’s local sales tax to fund a new aquatic center.
The absentee voting period will run from Sept. 22 until Nov. 6, the city of Marshall announced.
Absentee ballots will be available on the second floor of City Hall, at the Marshall city clerk’s office. Voters can also request an absentee ballot online at MNVOTES.ORG.
Absentee voting hours at City Hall will follow normal business hours, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., the city said. City Hall will also be open an additional day — Satuday, Nov. 4 — from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for absentee voting. City Hall will be open until 5 p.m. on Nov. 6, the last day to acquire an absentee ballot.
This fall, the city is holding a vote to decide whether to extend the amount of time that Marshall’s current local option sales tax is in place. The sales tax extension would be used to pay for up to $18.37 million in general obligation bonds, that would finance construction of a new Marshall Aquatic Center. The ballot will have one question, which will be a “yes” or “no” to extending the sales tax. The vote will not increase property taxes, city staff said.
City staff said voters who want to vote absentee on the question will need to fill out an application to receive an absentee ballot. Ballots can be completed at City Hall and immediately returned, or voters can take their ballots home and mail them back to City Hall.
Voters cannot pick up another person’s ballot, but they can drop off the application, and have the ballot mailed to the applicant.
A person can deliver up to three ballots to City Hall, but they must show identification and fill out a form before the ballots can be accepted. Ballots may not be delivered to a polling place.
On Election Day, polling places will be at the Red Baron Arena for Marshall Ward 1, the Marshall Middle School Gymnasium for Marshall Ward 2, and the Marshall Area YMCA for Marshall Ward 3. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
