Two fires reported in one night in Marshall area

MARSHALL — Local firefighters had an unusually busy night Monday, responding to both a house fire in Marshall and a fire at a farm site south of the city.

Marshall Fire Chief Quentin Brunsvold said there were no injuries in either fire, but there was significant damage to both a house on Horizon Drive in Marshall, and outbuildings at a farm on 250th Street. Both fires are under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The first of the two fires was reported after 10:30 p.m., at a home on the 1100 block of Horizon Drive. Brunsvold said a passerby saw fire on the outside of the house, and called it in.

“The Marshall Police Department responded right away and attempted to make sure everyone was out of the house,” Brunsvold said. The owner of the home was evacuated, and there were no injures reported in the fire.

The fire had worked its way from the outside of the house into the interior, Brunsvold said. While the Marshall Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire, “There was significant damage to the structure,” he said.

The second fire, at a farm site on 250th Street south of Marshall, was reported just as the MFD was coming back from the first fire scene. Brunsvold said one department member saw an orange glow in the sky and called it in.

“It was a very, very large and very hot fire,” Brunsvold said. The fire destroyed an outbuilding at the farm site, and the radiant heat from it also caused a barn, vehicles and an unoccupied trailer house to catch on fire.

Brunsvold said the MFD was assisted by the Lynd and Ghent Fire Departments in extinguishing the fire. The layout of the farm site posed challenges for firefighters.

“The challenge was, the farm yard was not made for fire engines to pull up,” Brunsvold said. Firefighters had to use a lot of hoses in order to access and put out the fire, he said. Firefighters didn’t clear the scene until after 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Brunsvold credited the responding fire departments, as well as North Memorial Ambulance, Marshall Police, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and Lyon-Lincoln Electric for their work at the fire scenes.

“They did an awesome job,” he said.
