Two area residents killed in weekend crashes
MARSHALL — A Marshall woman and a Russell man were killed in two separate fatal vehicle crashes over the weekend, law enforcement said.
Bu Ko, a 51-year-old Marshall woman, died after a two-vehicle crash which also injured two other people on Saturday. Steven Thooft, a 68-year-old rural Russell man, died of critical injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash near Lynd on Sunday.
The first of the two fatal crashes was reported at 6:14 p.m. Saturday at Highway 40 and 45th Street Southwest in Kandiyohi County. The Minnesota State Patrol said a 2017 Honda Pilot driven by Kyan Day, 27, of Marshall, and a 2023 Peterbilt semi driven by Roberto Rivero, 33, of Davie, Fla., collided in the intersection. Bu Ko, a passenger in the Honda, was taken to CentraCare Hospital in Willmar, and died of injuries sustained in the crash. Kyan Day and a passenger in the Honda, 64-year-old Ku Paw, both received non life-threatening injuries, the State Patrol said.
The driver of the semi was uninjured, the State Patrol said.
On Sunday, emergency medical services and law enforcement were called to a single-vehicle crash scene in the area near the intersection of 220th Avenue and Lyon County Road 20. The incident was reported around 4:29 p.m. Passers-by had located the crashed vehicle off the roadway, and a lone unresponsive male was inside the vehicle, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office said.
EMS started lifesaving efforts for the vehicle occupant, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene, the Sheriff’s Office said. The crash victim was identified as Steven Gene Thooft, of rural Russell.
The crash remains under investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said.
