Body found in northern MN identified as Marshall man

COOK COUNTY — A body recovered in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on Monday was identified as Marshall man reported missing last week, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office said.

In a news release, the Cook County Sheriff’s office said the body of Justin Sperl, 32, was found by canoeists in the Brule Lake area of the BWCA. Sperl was reported as a missing person on Aug. 10, after he had traveled to northern Minnesota on a solo camping trip.

Sperl’s vehicle was located at the Brule Lake landing in Cook County on Aug. 10. Law enforcement made contact with Sperl on Aug. 11, and at that time Sperl said he was fine and was only out canoeing, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and we extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Justin,” said Cook County Sheriff Pat Eliasen.

The Sheriff’s Office said further details on the incident are not being released, pending further investigation. Sperl’s body will be examined by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office said.
