Redwood Co. Fair, Shakespeare performances planned

By Deb Gau 4 min read

MARSHALL -- This weekend, fair season will start with a bang as the Redwood County Fair kicks off four days of midway fun, fireworks, musical entertainment and more. The entertainment lineup includes bull riding on Friday night, and performances by The Cadillac Three and country music artists Craig Morgan and Travis Denning.

In addition to the fair, weekend events in the area will include a traveling performance of two of Shakespeare's plays at the Marshall bandshell, and ongoing family events to go along with the Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant in Walnut Grove.

Redwood Co. Fair packs in entertainment

The gates of the Redwood County Fair will open in Redwood Falls this evening, and a variety of entertainment and grandstand events will take place through Saturday night. Fireworks displays will be tonight, Friday and Saturday night at dusk, and musical performances will feature rock and country music artists. Performances will include The Cadillac Three and special guest Jared Blake tonight; Craig Morgan and special guest Trailer Choir on Friday, and Travis Denning and special guest James Otto on Saturday.

Sunday will be Polkafest at the fair, with polka music all day on the main stage. The musical lineup includes the Marv Nissel Band, the Wendinger Band and Mollie B and Squeezebox with Ted Lange.

Grandstand entertainment events at the fair include Great Frontier Bullriding, which will start its show at 6 p.m. Friday. Demolition derby fans should catch Saturday's action, with a derby starting at 5 p.m.

Shakespeare in the park in Marshall

Theater-goers will be able to get a double dose of Shakespeare this weekend, as the Starling Shakespeare Company brings productions of "As You Like It" and "Julius Caesar" on tour to Marshall. With only five actors, Starling's shows are fast-paced and playful interpretations of classic plays, the company said.

Starling's tour stop in Marshall includes both a whimsical comedy, and a story of power and betrayal, the company said. In the comedy "As You Like It," young Rosalind disguises herself as a man and explores the complexities of love and friendship. Meanwhile, "Julius Caesar" features the political intrigue and turmoil of ancient Rome.

Both shows will be held at the Liberty Park bandshell. "As You Like It" will be performed at 6 p.m. on Saturday. "Julius Caesar" will be performed at 6 p.m Sunday. Tour information, and links to reserve tickets, is available online at www.starlingshakespearecompany.com.

Wilder Pageant, family festival continue in Walnut Grove

The second weekend of performances is coming up for the "Fragments of a Dream" pageant in Walnut Grove. This year's show, part of a new three-episode series, chronicles the events of the Ingalls family as they settled in Walnut Grove in the 1870s. A newly re-written script expands the story to include more of the historical events of the Ingalls' lives.

Visitors to Walnut Grove can also check out the Family Festival at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum. The event includes family activities, entertainment, demonstrations and more on Saturday. A Laura and Nellie look-alike contest will be held at 3 p.m, with registration starting at 1:30 p.m.
