Weekend fun at Western Fest rodeo to the river
GRANITE FALLS — There’s plenty of action planned at community festivals this weekend.
In Granite Falls, they’re expecting hundreds of cowboys and cowgirls to compete in events from bull riding to barrel racing.
“We’ve got a packed show,” said John Richter, chairman of the Western Fest Rodeo committee.
“All the events are full,” he said.
The 34th annual Western Fest PRCA rodeo runs tonight through Saturday, and 448 contestants will enter the arena over the course of three shows.
Richter said the annual event brings out a packed crowd at the Lee Mar Ranch arena just outside Granite Falls.
“Our rodeo has been growing every year,” Richter said. But one factor that has really drawn interest from the public has been a chance to cheer for a hometown cowboy. Granite Falls native Tanner Aus will be returning to compete in the rodeo tonight.
“I think area people really come out to support him,” Richter said.
In addition to the action of roping and bronco busting, the rodeo will also feature some specialty performers. Rider Kiesner will showcase cowboy skills like trick roping.
“People will really like his act,” Richter said. “There’s something for everybody, and we really encourage people to come out.”
Dawson celebrates community at Riverfest
Festivities at this year’s Riverfest are also swinging into gear in Dawson. Activities for all ages will be going on today, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
On Friday night, a Dawson community tradition will continue, with the unveiling of a new gnome statue at Swimming Pool Park. The Dawson gnomes have honored local citizens and community groups since 1988. This year, Deb Breberg will be honored with a gnome during an unveiling ceremony at 6:30 p.m.
This year’s Riverfest features a mix of active events, music and other fun. A kickball tournament, kids’ triathlon, and fun run/walk will all be held Thursday evening. Over the course of the weekend, softball and basketball tournaments will be held, as well as events on the Lac qui Parle River. Canoe races will be held on Friday afternoon, and a fishing contest will be held starting at 8 a.m. Saturday.
On Saturday night, the Dawson-Boyd Arts Association will be offering a unique musical experience, featuring the music of Johnny Cash. “Folsom Prison Experience,” which will be performed at Memorial Auditorium on Saturday night, brings together stage drama, live music and audience participation to recreate Johnny Cash’s famous concert for the inmates of California’s Folsom Prison.
