Marshall OKs cost in Hwy. 68 project

MARSHALL — The city of Marshall will be participating in part of the cost of highway resurfacing work planned between Minneota and Marshall.

At Tuesday’s meeting of the Marshall City Council, council members approved an agreement between the city and the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Marshall Public Works Director Jason Anderson said the agreement didn’t carry a high cost for the city, only about $3,000.

According to the MnDOT District 8 website, resurfacing work is planned to be done on on Highway 68 next year. The project would cover Highway 68 from North Grant Street in Minneota, to the intersection of Highway 68 and Highway 59 in Marshall. The city of Ghent would not be included in the project.

In addition, the project would also bring some sidewalks and pedestrian crossings up to ADA standards in Marshall. The work would affect sidewalks on Highway 19, and the intersections of Susan Drive and Boyer Drive, the MnDOT website said.

Anderson said the agreement being brought before the council had to do with utilities along Highway 68.

“There’s some sanitary sewer manholes that need to be adjusted in the project limits, and MnDOT’s cost participation policy would have us pay for that,” Anderson said. There would also be items like crosswalk maintenance included in the cost participation.

The city participation costs for the project would be about $3,000, he said.

Council members voted 6-1 to approve an agreement with MnDOT, with council member Steven Meister voting against.

MnDOT construction season is already underway in the Marshall area. One state project is planned on U.S. Highway 59 in Marshall in September. The project would resurface Main Street between A Street and H Street. The work is planned to be done under traffic, and won’t require a detour, according to the MnDOT website.
