Florence requests ARPA funding for streets, culverts
MARSHALL — It’s one of Lyon County’s smallest cities, but the community of Florence still has a long list of needed infrastructure repairs.
On Tuesday, members of the Lyon County Board approved a request from the city for $50,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funding to help with projects like culvert and street repairs.
Florence City Council member Diana Slyter presented the request to county commissioners.
Last spring, commissioners had approved a plan for dividing up a total of $1.9 million in ARPA funding set aside for 11 cities in Lyon County, and a total of $260,000 available for ambulance services. Since then, funding requests have been approved for items like chest compression devices for CPR, new firefighting equipment, a new county-wide emergency radio system, and water and sewer updates in cities like Russell, Minneota, Taunton and Lynd.
When the city of Florence looked at potential ARPA projects, Slyter said, “We got started with the list of everything in our city that needs fixing, and it’s pretty long.”
One need that “really stuck out” was culvert and ditch repair, Slyter said. Florence has had past problems with flooding, and maintaining the city’s culverts and ditches will be important for protecting housing, she said. Other projects that the ARPA money could go toward included street maintenance and paving some areas of gravel road.
The proposal brought to commissioners asked for $30,000 to go toward culverts and ditches, and $20,000 toward street repair and maintenance.
Commissioners approved the request.
