MARSHALL — This year, Independence Day will be a chance for Marshall area residents to wear their red, white, and blue suede shoes, Addy Wolbaum said. In addition to traditions like a fireworks display and concert, organizers said 4th of July celebrations in Marshall will include an appearance by an Elvis impersonator.

“I think it’s just something unique,” said Marshall city administrator Sharon Hanson.

City organizers said they wanted to have a fun evening planned, where people can gather and enjoy Independence Park. Food vendors will be available at the park starting at 5 p.m. July 4. The Marshall City Band will play a concert at 7:30.

After the city band concert, Elvis impersonator Anthony Shore will be at the park, organizers said.

Another big draw for the night is the July 4 fireworks show. Community education coordinator Amanda Beckler said the fireworks will start at 10:15 p.m. She estimated this year’s show would be about 18 to 20 minutes long.

“I think it’ll be a little bit longer show than in previous years,” she said. Audiences could look forward to an exciting display.

Marshall is one of several area communities who will be holding celebrations on July 4. Fireworks displays are also planned in Currie, and at Prairie’s Edge Casino Resort near Granite Falls. The community of Currie has an entire weekend’s worth of festivities lined up, starting with a flea market today from 9 a.m – 2 p.m. A street dance is planned Monday night, and a community picnic, volleyball and beanbag tournaments, and more will be held July 4.

The city of Ruthton also has its own Independence Day traditions. On Tuesday, a car show and a parade will be held, followed by a community lunch in the park and kids’ activities.
