Fire destroys barn south of Balaton
BALATON — A fire destroyed a barn and damaged two other outbuildings at a farm site south of Balaton on Monday. Firefighters from four area departments worked to put out the blaze, said Balaton Fire Chief Kasey Holm.
Lyon County emergency dispatchers reported a barn fire on property near 120th Avenue south of Balaton on Monday afternoon. Holm said the Balaton Fire Department received a call for a barn that was totally engulfed by flames.
“It was laid down by the time we got there,” Holm said of the structure.
The fire also caused extensive damage to a well house and a granary at the farm site. However, the wind direction Monday afternoon helped keep the fire from spreading to a nearby house, Holm said.
No injuries were reported in the fire. The property owner was not at home at the time of the fire, and a neighbor reported the blaze, Holm said.
Holm said the Balaton, Garvin, Tracy and Slayton Fire Departments all responded at the scene. Firefighters also set up at Lake Sarah to make sure they had a supply of water.
