HENDRICKS -- It's going to be a big weekend in the small community of Hendricks. This year, the annual Summerfest celebration will have events spread out over the course of six days.
"Summerfest is always big for us," said Hendricks City Administrator David Blees. He said organizers are anticipating a good crowd over the next few days. "I think Hendricks is a place people come back to for holidays," he said.
Summerfest kicks off Thursday and continues through Tuesday with events ranging from kids' inflatables and parades to a street dance and an all-school social.
"There are a lot of things going on this year," Blees said. One new event is the "Pizza, Pints & Puzzles" contest that will be held Friday evening. Teams of four adults will race to eat a pizza, drink a pack of beer and finish a 300-piece puzzle. The contest looks like it will be popular. A total of 16 teams - the maximum the contest was able to have - signed up, said Stephanie Pederson of the Hendricks Community Club.
Pederson said another new competition will be the Golf Cart Scavenger Hunt, where teams will compete to find items and take photos at specific places in Hendricks, all within a one-hour time limit.
Blees said other Summerfest events will take place at one of Hendricks' newest community facilities. The "sport court" at Veterans' Memorial Park includes tennis and pickleball courts, and basketball hoops. It will be the venue for events like a three-on-three basketball tournament and a pickleball demonstration, he said.
Some of the fun this weekend will focus on community. On Monday evening, the Hendricks Community Spirit Award will be presented. "It is given to a person or group who is highly involved in the community," Blees said. After the awards presentation, there will be a community talent and variety show.
One new feature at Summerfest will help attendees get to and from events, Blees said. The Hendricks Community Club's golf cart taxi and trolley will be available from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday. Attendees can text the service for a ride within city limits.
