Visit Marshall donates $40,000 for Legion Field improvements

MARSHALL — Plans for updates to Legion Field are in the works – and they’ll have help in the form of a donation from Visit Marshall.

This week, the Marshall City Council formally accepted a $40,000 donation, which will go toward improvements to the Legion Field grandstand, dugouts and more. Visit Marshall Director Cassi Weiss said Visit Marshall board members voted to donate to the projects at their most recent meeting.

“We just appreciate everything that the Parks Department does for us,” Weiss said. “We wanted to give back, and we look forward to the experience it will give visitors once it’s done.”

“It’s very generous of them, and we appreciate Cassi and the board’s support for this,” said Marshall parks and recreation superintendent Preston Stensrud. Stensrud said Visit Marshall has also supported other parks projects, like inclusive playground equipment and other equipment purchases.

At Tuesday’s council meeting, Stensrud shared concept drawings for proposed updates at Legion Field. In 2022, Stensrud started working with an architectural firm and local baseball associations on possible improvements.

The concept drawings included an overhaul of the Legion Field grandstand, as well as adding a party deck and shade canopy. The concept drawings also show improvements like converting the existing dugouts to sunken dugouts, and adding indoor batting cages.

Marshall city staff said Parks and Recreation is currently working with the architects to find a way to break the project into phases. Sponsorships and donations will be needed along with city funding to make the improvements possible, staff said.
