MARSHALL — A vehicle fire near East College Drive sent up a plume of smoke and attracted a lot of attention on Monday morning.
The Marshall Fire Department put out the fire, which destroyed a van parked outside the Arby’s on College Drive.
Marshall Deputy Fire Chief Jake Olsen said the fire affected the rear and interior of the van, and not the engine. However, the cause of the fire was not known.
Olsen said the van belonged to an Arby’s employee who had arrived at work earlier that morning.
Olsen said explosions were reported during the fire. They likely came from tailgate hydraulics and airbags in the van, Olsen said. Those parts of a vehicle can explode in the heat of a fire, he said.
Olsen said firefighters arrived at the scene quickly, and started getting water on the burning vehicle right away.
