Memorial Day programs planned in area

This Monday, southwest Minnesota residents will join people around the country in honoring U.S. military members who gave their lives in service to their country. Memorial Day programs and observances will be held in many area communities, and at local cemeteries.

This year, Memorial Day observances in Lake Benton will remember a World War II serviceman whose remains will be coming home to Minnesota after more than 80 years. Part of a program at the Lake Benton Opera House will tell the story of Lake Benton resident Glenn Cyriack, who was killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, said Lake Benton resident Bob Worth.

Cyriack’s remains weren’t immediately identified after the attack, and he was buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. Many years later, DNA analysis was able to identify Cyriack, and this summer his remains will be returned for burial at a cemetery near Verdi.
