Hats off to mother’s day at Boulder Estates

MARSHALL -- Boulder Estates residents who are also mothers put both their heads and their hearts into the upcoming Mother's Day celebration.
They participated Wednesday afternoon in a hat-based fashion show. More than 20 residents walked down a fully decorated runway and through an arch to model their favorite hats.
In a script written for the show, they shared their thoughts on what they like best about being a mother. They also offered advice to moms everywhere about what it takes to be successful in a mother's role.
Jen Ahmann, who wore a fancy blue hat adorned with black sequins, listed a group of things that she likes about being a mother and grandmother. She has six children, 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Her list includes loving them, giving them lots of hugs, cooking for them, making cookies, playing games and enjoying back yard baseball.
"I try to spend a lot of time with them," Ahmann said. "It's important to listen to them and to give advice."
Alice Skorczewski wore a black elegant hat suitable for a night on the town. She has nine children, 17 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.
"I appreciate all the love they give me," Skorczewski said. "I'll always hold on to those precious memories. It's important to listen to children and take time for them."
Mary Lou Lange wore a dainty cream colored hat. She has three children, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren with two more on the way.
"I like everything about being a mom or grandma," Lange said. "It's the greatest. It's important to do the best you can. We should always have an open door."
The last model in the show was Phyllis Carr. She wore a cap that says Dog Mom in honor of her grand dog named Bo. She has three children, eight grandchildren (nine if you count the grand dog), and seven great grandchildren.
She said no one does an absolutely perfect job of being a mother, but that it's important to try for something as close to perfection as possible.
"The thing I like best is all the hugs," Carr said. "There is no way to be a perfect mom, but a million ways to be a good mom."
Boulder Estates Activities Assistant Sue Jants said activities staff decided to have a fashion show based on hats since fashion shows have been popular at Boulder Estates in the past.
"This time we decided to focus on hats," Jants said. "We thought it would be a good symbol for Mother's Day. Mothers have to wear lots of hats."
