Fire destroys Schak Trucking building in Tyler

TYLER — Fire claimed a large building near U.S. Highway 14 in Tyler early Saturday morning.

While no injuries were reported, the Schak Trucking building was destroyed, Tyler Fire Chief Al Barber said.

The Tyler Fire Department received the fire call around 5:45 a.m., Barber said.

“It was totally engulfed when we got there,” he said.

At that point, it was important to get as many people on site as they could to help contain the blaze, he said.

There was a lot of open space around part of the building, but firefighters were still watching to make sure the flames didn’t spread to nearby properties.

Throughout Saturday morning, Tyler firefighters received assistance from the Lake Benton, Arco, Russell, Ruthton and Balaton Fire Departments, Barber said. Community members also helped provide food and water for the area firefighters.

Barber said the business property was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

It’s been a while since Tyler firefighters have responded to a fire as big as the one Saturday morning, Barber said. However, he said having support from mutual aid helped.

“Everyone worked well together, and everyone had enough support,” Barber said.
