GRANITE FALLS — A law enforcement officer was injured during a search at a Granite Falls residence on Monday afternoon, the Granite Falls Police Department said.

Police said a suspect shot at officers when they entered the residence, and later surrendered after a 70-minute standoff.

An officer who said he had been struck by a bullet was treated at Avera Granite Falls hospital and released, Police said.

The incident is being investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Around 4 p.m. Monday, officers from the Cooperative Enforcement Effort VI Drug and Gang Task Force, Granite Falls Police, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office and Upper Sioux Community Police executed a knock and announce search warrant at a residence on Bergeson Drive in Granite Falls, Police said in a news release. The release did not identify the subject of the search warrant, but it said the suspect was wanted for felony warrants on weapons and drug charges.

Upon entering the residence, officers took gunfire from someone inside, Granite Falls Police said. Officers returned fire and retreated outside, Police said. One officer said he had been struck by a bullet, and was transported to the hospital, Police said.

The news release did not identify the officer, or give information on his condition. He was later released from the hospital, Granite Falls Police said Monday night.

The suspect surrendered to officers after a standoff, and was taken into custody, Police said. Police said the suspect was being held in the Yellow Medicine County Jail pending charges.

About a dozen area law enforcement agencies responded to the incident, including the Chippewa, Renville, Lac qui Parle and Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Offices, the Minnesota State Patrol, and the Montevideo, Dawson/Boyd and Willmar Police Departments.

On Monday night, the Minnesota BCA confirmed that the BCA Force Investigations Unit was investigating the incident in Granite Falls, but could not share further information. Granite Falls Police said future media releases on the incident would come from the BCA.
