Granite Falls man charged with shooting officer

GRANITE FALLS — A Granite Falls man has been charged with shooting a law enforcement officer in an incident that led to a standoff Monday afternoon, court records said.

William Edward Schindler, 26, appeared in Yellow Medicine County District Court Wednesday on four separate sets of charges, including charges of first degree attempted murder and first degree assault, court records said.

The court cases included alleged offenses leading up to the incident where a law enforcement officer was wounded while executing a search warrant to apprehend Schindler. A criminal complaint alleges Schindler began firing on three officers when they entered a house on Bergeson Drive in Granite Falls on Monday.

The wounded officer was treated and released at the Granite Falls hospital, and Schindler surrendered to law enforcement, Granite Falls Police said Tuesday.

Bail for Schindler was set at $2 million without conditions, court records said.

In one of the cases in court Wednesday, Schindler was charged with ineligible possession of firearms or ammunition, five counts of fifth degree drug possession, and receiving stolen property. That case involved an earlier search warrant that allegedly found drugs, a firearm and ammunition at a residence when Schindler was not home.

In February, the CEE-VI Drug and Gang Task Force, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office and Granite Falls Police had executed a search warrant at a residence on Sixth Avenue in Granite Falls in order to locate stolen power tools, a criminal complaint alleged. While searching the residence, law enforcement also found drugs including methamphetamine and fentanyl, drug paraphernalia, and a handgun and ammunition, the complaint alleged.

In the next case heard Wednesday, Schindler was charged with three counts of first degree attempted murder, three counts of first degree assault, and ineligible possession of firearms or ammunition. Those charges were directly connected to the shooting incident and standoff Monday on the 1000 block of Bergeson Drive in Granite Falls.

A criminal complaint said law enforcement officers, including agents from the CEE-VI Task Force executed a search warrant at the residence to apprehend Schindler. One agent knocked and entered the residence, and began taking control of the resident who answered the door, the complaint alleged. Two more officers entered the residence following the first agent. Upon entering, the officers began taking gunfire from inside the house, the complaint alleged. They retreated outside.

The complaint alleged that Agent Jason Hay, the first officer to enter the house, was hit by one of the shots and wounded in the lower torso.

After a standoff of more than an hour, Schindler came out of the residence and surrendered, the complaint alleged. A follow-up investigation of the house found .40 caliber casings and a .40 caliber pistol hidden inside a hole in the wall, the complaint alleged.

Schindler also appeared in court Wednesday for probation violations on two earlier convictions from 2021, one for methamphetamine possession, and one for fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and possessing ammunition.

A future hearing date for Schindler was set for April 24.

One other person who was in the Bergeson Drive residence when law enforcement executed the search warrant also appeared in Yellow Medicine County Court on Wednesday, court records said. Jordan Keith Ross, 39, appeared on charges of possessing a short-barreled shotgun and possessing fentanyl. A criminal complaint alleged that a search of Ross’ residence found drugs including marijuana and fentanyl, and firearms including a short-barreled shotgun.

Bail for Ross was set at $75,000 without conditions, court records said. A future hearing date was also set for April 24.

Starting at $3.95/week.
