Wind, snow send 54 vehicles off the road

MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota roads proved treacherous for motorists on Thursday, according to data from the Minnesota State Patrol.

Between 9 a.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. Friday, dozens of vehicles went into the ditch in the State Patrol region that includes Marshall, said Sgt. Troy Christianson of the State Patrol.

A total of 54 vehicles off the road and 21 jackknifed semi trucks were reported, he said. In the same time frame, the State Patrol also reported a total of 10 crashes in the region. Two of the crashes involved injuries, Christianson said.

Strong winds and drifting snow led the Minnesota Department of Transportation to advise no travel in parts of southwest Minnesota on Thursday. Several area highways were shut down during the day, and there were widespread road closures overnight Thursday.

The area is in for more hazardous weather conditions this weekend, according to the National Weather Service. While the strong winds leading to blowing snow and poor visibility are predicted to weaken on Saturday, wind chills may fall as low as 20 degrees below zero, the NWS said.

Travelers are advised to drive to conditions, and be prepared for conditions to change quickly.

Temperatures will rise in the early part of next week, with rain likely in Marshall area on Wednesday and Thursday.

Starting at $3.95/week.
